What kind of wood do you use? I primarily work with straight or quarter sawn oak but also use walnut or maple. Historically these species have proven to stand the test of time not only in strength and durability; but also have the ability to remain stylish through changing fashions due to each species inherent ability to merge with various styles and decor.

Do you use sustainable techniques and materials? Sustainability comes in many forms one of which is producing and purchasing something that will last for generations. Using highly skilled construction techniques and striking yet harmanizing designs, each piece of furniture is created in order to achieve the timeless quality, unfailing beauty, and function required to ensure a lasting item. Having a resource conservation degree has directly impacted my determination to deliver you this type of product and to consider where and what materials I use in order to achieve this. Limiting the use of perhaps quarter sawn oak to highly visual aesthetic places and straight or other species or plywood where function and stability reign (cleats, backs of case goods, drawer bottoms, facing shelves, etc). I also spend extra time in culling raw boards in order to position each piece in an aesthetically appropriate place and to cut down on waste.

How can I get color samples? Just ask! Color samples are sent free of charge!

Why are sizes approximate? Sizes are given in order for you to see if an item will fit where you wish. Using a natural living material and being handcrafted it is essential to allow for minor size discrepancies. I have the ability to make each piece uniquely and positively its own individual and best representation thus the soul of the piece of furniture is established. This is perhaps the biggest advantage to being the lone builder. For example, should I come across a strikingly beautiful board that between defects is just under the approximate size I will take the opportunity to position this board in order to high light the beauty and essence of the final product and not worry about reaching an exact size. This is done in order to bestow each piece its own individual and best representation even though it makes my job more complicated through out the process. That being said size variations are limited, small and inmaterial to design or function.

What is Up for Grabs? These items are projects I wanted to create for the world. Perhaps I had a design I wanted to see in real life or had wood on hand that inspired me to make a Portfolio piece again. Maybe I had the ambition to make a few pieces at once or possibly a piece of wood just needed to be something else. A delivery charge is added into the price of these items during checkout and they are made, ready, and will be shipped within 5 business days upon receipt of payment. While few and far between these items give you a special and unprecedented opportunity to purchase a SheBuilt Designs item without having to wait at least 12 weeks!

“The quality of a man’s life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence.” (Sherman Alexie)

How do Portfolio and custom orders work? Portfolio pieces are available for purchase as are custom changes to these pieces. These items are solely built to order and a delivery charge is not added into the shown Portfolio prices. You get to choose the color, finish, and make any custom size or perhaps design changes to better fit your needs. Feel free to inquire and Contact me. A price, delivery price, and time estimate for completion will be given. After all specifics have been established I will invoice you and a nonrefundable 50% down payment is due. This establishes a time slot on my build schedule for your item. Any changes to this initial confirmation can result in a longer build time and an increase in the previously established final price. The final 50% payment and the delivery charge is due upon completion prior to delivery. It takes usually takes 12 weeks for these orders to be created and finished ready for delivery; however, a more precise time estimate will be given upon inquiry.

How and when will my order be delivered? Orders in the Up For Grabs section have delivery added at the time of checkout and are ready to ship and will be sent with in 5 business days via common carrier (UPS or Fed Ex). You will be sent necessary info at this time: tracking numbers, care guidelines for your new furniture, etc. Orders inquired about in the Portfolio section and custom orders do not have delivery charges added in. These usually take around 12 weeks to complete. Once an order is placed having all details determined, confirmed, and a 50% nonrefundable down payment received, your item will have established a spot on my build schedule. I start purchasing materials and begin the building process. You will be given specifics on when your furniture will be completed. Like Up For Grabs these pieces will also be delivered via common carrier (UPS or Fed Ex) or a specialty service. Further details and pricing for custom and Portfolio pieces will be provided at the time of inquiry.

What do I need to know about maintenance and care? Direct heat, sunlight, and water are the greatest foes to lasting beauty. Place your furniture out of direct sunlight, away from heat, and clean up any spills quickly. Do not use wood cleaners or oils, instead it is best to clean dust and spills with a soft cloth and mild soap. Your furniture is either finished with a hand applied polyurethane (for high use areas such as an office requiring extreme durability) or a hand applied shellac (smaller or home items that will be show pieces in their beauty) or a Danish oil (which enhances the inherent qualities of specifically walnut). Your piece has been double waxed; however, after a few years of direct use it may be necessary to reapply. Shellac is historically what was used and is incomparable in its beauty; however, it is not moisture or heat resistant thus reapplying wax (which provides the necessary moisture and heat resistance) and adhering to the above recommendations is important. Should damage occur on any piece of furniture consult a professional furniture refinisher in your area for their professional opinion and skills.
